Self-Compassion Across Cultures — Hiroe Takeuchi, MSC Certified Teacher

Self-Compassion Across Cultures

You’ve crossed borders, built a career, adapted to new cultures.
Yet somehow, you still feel unfulfilled.

No matter where you go, no matter how hard you try — that “not enough” feeling follows. What if the answer isn’t in the next place, but within?

Do any of these sound familiar?

The “Next Place” Illusion

“If I just move to the right country, get the right job, achieve the next thing… then I’ll finally feel fulfilled.” But wherever you go, that emptiness follows.

The Belonging Void

You’ve built a life abroad — the language, the culture, the friends and colleagues. Yet deep down, you don’t fully belong here, and you no longer fully belong back home either.

The Endless Proving

As an expat or immigrant, you feel you have to work twice as hard to earn the same recognition. The pressure to prove yourself never stops.

The Achievement Trap

Your CV looks impressive. You’ve accomplished so much. But inside, a quiet voice keeps saying: “This still isn’t enough.”

The Exhaustion Paradox

You’re tired. So tired. But you don’t know how to stop. “Trying harder” is the only way you’ve ever known.

The “I’m Fine” Mask

Everyone thinks you have it together — the strong one, the capable one. But who takes care of you?

If any of these resonate, you’re not alone — and there’s a different way.

Hiroe Takeuchi, MSC Certified Teacher — Self-Compassion Across Cultures

Hi, I’m Hiroe. I’ve walked this path.

Born in China, raised in Japan, and living in the Netherlands for 11+ years.

For years, I believed the next place would bring fulfillment. China → Japan → Netherlands: new countries, new careers, new achievements. I kept trying harder, adapting better, achieving more — yet that “not enough” feeling always followed.

Until I discovered something unexpected: belonging isn’t found in a place. It’s found within.

Self-compassion taught me to stop chasing and start befriending myself. Now I help others walking the same path.

If you’re exhausted from chasing fulfillment across cultures, I’d love to explore this journey with you.

What is Self-Compassion?

Becoming Your Own Best Friend

When you’ve spent years adapting to new cultures and proving yourself, being kind to yourself can feel unfamiliar — even uncomfortable.

But self-compassion isn’t about giving up. It’s about coming home to yourself — treating yourself with the same warmth you’d offer a friend who’s far from home.

Mindfulness

Noticing when things get hard — the pressure of adapting, achieving, belonging — without judging yourself for struggling.

Self-Kindness

Responding to yourself with warmth when things don’t go as planned, instead of the harsh “try harder” voice that’s pushed you across borders.

Common Humanity

Remembering that feeling like an outsider, facing setbacks, and questioning your path is part of every global journey. You’re not alone in this.

Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an evidence-based program developed by psychologists Dr. Kristin Neff and Dr. Christopher Germer. Backed by 20+ years of research, self-compassion has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression, increase resilience, improve relationships, and support sustainable motivation — without the burnout.

What Participants Say

Voices from my Japanese-language MSC courses. English-language courses begin in 2026.

“Once I began turning compassion toward myself, I saw just how constantly I’d been running on self-criticism. I realized my mind and body had been pushing through overwhelm for so long — and a real tenderness toward myself rose up on its own. Since the course began, I’ve simply felt lighter.”

— A.F., mental health professional · MSC 8-Week Course

“By bringing compassion to my own anxiety, fear, and shame, I realized something: the only one who can truly heal me is me. And once I can tend to myself, I stop placing impossible expectations on the people around me and meet them with warmth instead.”

— K.K. · MSC 8-Week Course

“At first I was nervous about gathering with others. But week by week, I came to feel that somewhere in the world, others were practicing self-compassion too. Even now that the course has ended, I still feel that quiet sense of connection — I’m not alone.”

— R.D., professional · MSC 8-Week Course
